In the classroom

Teachers teach 17/18 classes per week, which is seven different groups of a maximum of 14 students, meeting two or three times a week. The classes last an hour and twenty minutes and students are expected to be speaking English for the vast majority of their class time. Although classes are offered from 7:30 in the morning until 9:00 in the evening, teachers are not asked to teach a split shift and the norm is to teach late afternoon/evening classes.

Out of the classroom

Aside from the classroom time, teachers are expected to spend adequate time planning their lessons -

researching and/or creating suitable supplementary materials. These lesson plans are to be written up in case of sickness, etc. Other duties include grading student’s tests and assessing student’s spoken and written English.

During orientation week, amongst other things, new teachers observe classes and are given a Teacher’s Manual. Teachers are expected to supplement their classes with suitable communicative activities (similar to what they would have seen during their peer observation). Teachers are also expected to adhere to the guidelines laid down in the Teacher’s Manual.

Placement Tests

Once teachers have become accustomed to the different courses available they are trained for Placement Testing of prospective students. Teachers conduct a short oral interview with guidelines indicating the prospective student’s level from their written test score.

Saturday Duties

EF occasionally organizes group activities for students which take place on a Saturday. Teachers are occasionally asked to supervise these activities which last for about 2 hours.

EF English First recognizes the importance of beginning language classes as early as possible since young learners often assimilate some elements of vocabulary and pronunciation almost as easily as they do in their first language. All of our schools have specially designed programs for all age groups with lessons which are fun and provide a solid base in English which can be built upon through the later teen and adult professional years.

The teachers chosen to conduct these classes are especially prepared to meet the needs of young people in the design of the lessons and the activities which accompany them. Extensive use of games, videos and computers are included in the curriculum taking advantage of the many excellent materials now being produced in England and the United States specifically for children. The students are carefully placed in groups according to age and language ability to provide the maximum level of confidence in young learners.

We have 3 Young Learners Programs:

1. Small Stars for students age 4-5 years old
2. High Flyers for students in grade 1-4 at Elementary School
3. New Trailblazers for students in grade 5 at Elementary School up to 2nd Grade of Junior High School.

Our Corporate clients: General Motors, Hitachi, IBM, Kenwood, Premier Oil, Swiss Air, Standard Chartered Bank, Shell Oil, Toshiba , Volvo, Adidas, Akzo Nobel, Coca Cola, Ferragamo, Ferrari

We have exciting opportunities in our Corporate Language Training (CLT) Department for teachers of English as a second language to professionals and young learners in Surabaya. The programmes for professionals are designed primarily for groups of adult students who wish to improve their English for career purposes, and we occasionally run one-on-one classes too.

Teachers will work with professionals from a wide range of different fields and backgrounds, many of whom are studying English for specific purposes. In recent years our major clients have included some of the best known companies in Surabaya in industry, finance and services, as well as universities, colleges and government departments.

These groups meet on their company premises or in one of the EF schools, so teachers will need to travel to different locations in the city. For off-site classes, the teacher’s transport costs will be reimbursed unless transport is provided by the client. The CLT Department’s programmes for young learners generally meet in private and public elementary and high schools. We also run a small number of courses in private kindergartens. The lessons taught by EF teachers include extra-curricular lessons that students opt to join, and an increasing number of intra-curricular lessons which form part of the school’s regular English language programme.

In the young learners’ programme, teachers work with a range of age groups and English levels, with class sizes of up to twenty students. Teachers liaise regularly with the regular teachers in the school, and also need to keep up with the required administrative duties and record-keeping.

The CLT Department offers morning and afternoon classes in both the professional and young learners’ programmes, and some evening classes for professionals. The CLT Department offers great opportunities for teachers who wish to broaden their experience teaching both professionals and young learners, who have a strong interest in professional development, and who can be flexible in the scheduling and location of their classes. The CLT Department is located at our Jemursari school, where resources for CLT teachers are available and the academic and administrative support staff are based.

Salary
The base salary is in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) and after successfully completing a one year contract the teacher is awarded a one month bonus. The cost of the return flight to the point of origin is also covered by EF.

Housing
Housing is shared with two or three other teachers in an EF rented, furnished house. Those who wish to make their own housing arrangements will receive an additional monthly housing allowance. The salary permits a comfortable lifestyle including the cost of vacation travel within Indonesia.

Medical Expenses
EF offers a two tiered Health package to teachers on a full time contract. In the case of hospitalization teachers are covered by health Insurance. As with any health insurance provision there are limits, but we feel that the insurance will be adequate for nearly all cases in which in-patient treatment is required.

EF also offers limited payment of out-patient medical expenses, although there are limits on the type of out-patient expenses that can be refunded under this scheme. We are happy to address specific questions relating to health insurance during the application process.

Teachers’ Load
Teachers normally carry a maximum load of 18 classes per week but may be asked to teach additional classes when the need for substitution arises{at overtime rates}. There is occasional Saturday duty as well. The classes last an hour and twenty minutes and are offered from 7:30 in the morning until 9:00 in the evening. The contract includes fifteen working days of vacation per year in addition to a week at Christmas and a week at the end of the Muslim Ramadhan period during which times the schools are closed.

The EF English First approach combines maximum progress with maximum communicative practice. It develops fluency, confidence and accuracy while improving all the essential skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. The result is successful and effective communication, teaching students how to really use the language in real-life situations. It is important to mention that all of these skills are important and all of these skills are communicative. Oral communication or conversation alone is not sufficient for learners to experience great progress. Listening, reading and writing provide rich sources of language from which students can build up their knowledge and vocabulary.

The General English Programs last for 8-12 weeks per level. The General English course is for students from the 3rd grade of Junior High School (15 years old) to adults. The Program combines the EF English First book, audio visual material, multimedia computers & interactive classrooms. There is a minimum of 8 students per class and a maximum of 15 students per class.

There are several types of General English Programs :

1. Easy English – with native English speaking teachers.
2. Access English – with native English teachers + local teachers (12 meetings with a local teacher and 12 meetings with a native speaking teacher).
3. Active English – with Indonesian English teachers.

Our General English curriculum presently consists of 17 levels. We provide students with a solid base in the structure of the English language as well as a genuine opportunity to practice speaking. This involves extensive use of communicative methodology to reinforce and complement various grammatical/structural points throughout the syllabus.

The minimum age for study in the general program is twelve and the majority of the students attend private secondary schools or universities. They come to us looking for a supplement to their more formal grammar/translation classes and we endeavour to provide an active, communicative and friendly student based learning environment.

A large portion of the programs offered are for “young learners” (for students from six to twelve years of age). This program has its own curriculum and texts. Teachers who have been with us for a few months are often asked to teach these classes. Teachers who prefer teaching adults are often asked to teach other specialized programs such as Conversation Club, Business English and TOEFL.

In any given level, 3 or 4 periods of 40 minutes are devoted to computer work for which we have state of the art techology. A large part of orientation week is taken up introducing teachers to multi-media EFL teaching.

Our general English classes use our own English@EF textbook as the base curriculum and other ELT resources to supplement. The English First course starts at absolute beginner and goes to advanced, divided into twelve levels. We also offer six “Post Advanced” levels to encourage our students to continue practicing their English. Lessons are centered on the communicative method and focus is placed on establishing interactive competence in learners as quickly as possible.
